He is from here and from there, from the East and from the West. Since he was a little child, my son, Delazad, has traveled around the world, sometimes sharing my life as a photojournalist. Whether traveling with our family or alone with me, he was eager for discovery, entering fully into our adventures, like a dervish looking for knowledge. As a baby, he used to fall asleep to the sound of troubadours while I was on assignment by the Caspian Sea.As a boy, he rode his scooter down the streets of Paris, Rollerbladed through New York, went on horseback in Libya. Crossing the Bosporus, he watched as seagulls flew in the sky, melding with the minarets. Dressed like an Egyptian child of the past, he played with the lights of a traditional house in Cairo, stepping on the patches of light. Later, when he was older, he drew a map of an imaginary subway for Kabul. Through these experiences, he has savored life, learned, seen, and felt. The world has become his school, his home. Like him, his friends are from here and from there, from the East and from the West.When my son was seven days old, an old man whispered in his ear, “Your name will be Delazad, which means ‘free soul.’” A few years later, the name Djanan was whispered in his sister’s ear, a name that means “breath of life.” From these first, secret whisperings, I hope that they will live by the idea of building a world that is open and expansive, without borders and without wars.
