Hundreds of American WWI soldiers from New England’s Yankee Division were here. It was found in a part of the underground city where many American artifacts remain: cooking utensils, tobacco tins, American rations, a cigar box with colorful printed designs, shoes, ammunition and more.

WWI was a modern tragedy fought by modern people who went to war believing that it would help break through modern numbness and enable them to “get in touch” with the deeper meaning of life. The dehumanizing effects of modern city life affected them in the same way that it affects us today.

WWI revealed that modern progress and technology has a dark side. When we allow the inhuman scale of modern life to make us numb to what makes us human, we become vulnerable to illusions about modern life that can produce unthinkable tragedy, suffering and cosmic despair.

Hope lies in knowing that the power and beauty of the human spirit can not be destroyed by modern life. Acts of courage and conscience are all around us, even in the darkest hour.
