Photograph by @remibenali. Arles, France, this past Thursday. A Roman face appearing in the light after 2000 years sleeping in the darkness. Arles, where I live, has welcomed since 45 years Les Rencontres, a prestigious international photo festival. Professional photographers gather from around the world for the first week of July. But no, there is no time to see exhibitions right now, not to mention any parties as I am working hard...On the other side of the Rhône River, team leader Marie-Pierre Rothé, fresco specialist Julien Boislève and archaeologist Alain Geunot have been digging patiently since 2 years on a Domus or the remains of a Roman mansion. Objects have been found, mosaics even but the most impressive by far are its Roman wall frescoes. They date back to 50 B.C. and are in the same style as the exceptional Villa of Mysteries in Pompeii - something that is unique in France! They were painted when the city was founded by Julius Caesar and offered to the veterans of the 6th Legion Ferrata (the Iron Legion) who helped him to conquest Gaul and secure the wheat supply to Italy from Egypt. Who is this enigmatic figure? What tales does he have to tell? They will keep digging and I will listen to tell you the answer in a few years... Meanwhile on my feed @remibenali we are about to discover an equally important treasure in the Sahara... #France #Arles #archaeology #romanfrescoes #discovery
