Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | A German mountaintop bunker on the Hartmannswillerkopf battlefield on the Vosges front in Alsace. On the horizon are Germany and Switzerland.

The trenches here were cut out of stone and remain well-preserved today despite the passage of a century. Hartmannswillerkopf, also known by the French term Le Vieil Armand, is a place where visitors can touch the past. In many places, the battlefield remain frozen-in-time with the original barbed wire fortifications in front of the trenches. It is WWI in the raw.

Hartmannswillerkopf is just one mountain battlefield along the Vosges front where a hidden world of WWI still exists and is accessible to all. As an added bonus, amazing dining, romantic lodging and beautiful scenery abound in this part of France.
