Members of the Awa indigenous people seen in a refuge after the massacre of twelve members of their community, including five children, by unidentified masked men in 2009. After the killings, some 300 Awa took shelter in refuges. The massacre took place at the home of Sixta Tulia García, who was killed along with two of her children. García had been a witness at a trial for the murder of her husband earlier in the year, allegedly at the hands of army soldiers, leading to speculation that this massacre was perpetrated by the army. The Awa have also suffered attacks from FARC guerrillas in the region.
Indígenas Awa, quienes han sido amenazados y atacados tanto por las FARC como por otros actores armados, en un refugio después de una matanza de 12 miembros de su comunidad por hombres encapuchados en el 2009. Los indígenas reclamaron que sus asesinos, esta vez, han sido miembros de la fuerza publica. Este ataque desplazó mas que trescientos indígenas de sus tierras a estos refugios dentro de su territorio ancestral.
