The ancient New Year’s Day celebration, which occurs on the first day of spring, had come to an end. The crowd had left. Those who had danced themselves into a trance had also gone home. Calm had returned to the esplanade. At dawn, all was silent. The doves seemed to be the only witnesses to a strange ritual : A solitary woman, Completely veiled by her golden chadri, as the chador is called in Afghanistan, was walking around and around the Blue Mosque. Mazar-e Sharif is the most important pilgrimage site in Afghanistan. The war with the Russians, followed by years of fratricidal conflicts, had prevented Afghans from coming to the mosque, thought to contain the tomb of Ali, the son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad. But the fall of the Taliban regime marked the start of pilgrimages to this sacred site again. The white doves flocked to the square, inspiring me to dream, for an instant, of an Afghanistan at peace.
