Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi/@thephotosociety | The carnage of WWI becomes real when in this space where the remains of 7,000 young men, German, American, French, Italian, and Czechoslovakian troops, were laid to rest after the war. Most of them were so badly mutilated that their identities were also destroyed.
As a practicing emergency physician, these remains take on an even greater meaning since many of the bones reveal severe war injuries: bullet holes in skulls, fractured faces and skulls...even skulls with large parts blown away. The violence and power of WWI weapons is not imaginary when in this place.

These bones are located at the Haute Cheveche ossuary. It is in a beautiful rural location in the Argonne region, the sight of heavy fighting. Harry Truman commanded an artillery unit near hear during the war and would later become America’s 33rd President.
