For years I traveled the American Southwest photographing Native American rock art. I’ve always been fascinated by an image’s ability to outlast its author. That fascination culminated in a story about art published in @ナショナルジオグラフィック this last January.
Of all the rock art the Great Gallery of Horse Shoe Canyon has some of the largest and best preserved images. The biggest of these figures is over 2meters tall. It is assumed that Horseshoe canyon was painted by Desert Archaic Culture sometime before 1300 AD. It was a time that the South West had considerable more rainfall and could support agriculture. Drought –it is theorized- drove the culture from the South West.
