Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi/@thephotosociety | Now in complete darkness about 40 feet below a beautiful French farm field in Picardy lies this abandoned WWI underground city. It was a bustling subterranean living and working environment, approximately 100 acres in size, and was once teaming with WWI soldiers. In 1914, at the beginning of WWI, it was occupied by the French. But in 1915 it was conquered by the Germans. Signs of fierce underground combat can be seen today. And in 1918, it was occupied by hundreds of American WW1 troops from New England’s Yankee Division enabling them to live in relative safety close to the front line trenches.

This drawing of Buffalo Bill was never signed. But there’s no doubt that the artist was American and the year of its creation was 1918.
