The Nowruz festivities, the New Year as it has been celebrated in the region on March 21st since the dawn of time, is over. The men and their horses are resting now, the trances are over, the crowds have gone home, the threat of war is far away. In the early hours of the morning, calm has returned to the esplanade. Silence reigns. The pigeons seem to be the only witnesses to a strange ritual: the solitary stroll of a woman hidden beneath her golden chador. It is said that any woman who walks around the sanctuary forty times at dawn each day for forty days will enjoy fertility. The city is the most important place of pilgrimage. With almost a decade of war against the Russians, followed by ten years of civil war, many Afghans were prevented from journeying to this sacred place of pilgrimage. The fall of the Taliban led to the resumption of pilgrimages to this shrine. The white pigeons who inhabit the place encourage one to dream for an instant of a country at peace.
