Adrian Portia (@adrian_portia) fell in love with the handpan drum in 2008, after spotting it in a video online. Unfortunately, at that time there was only one place in the world to buy one, and the waitlist was long. “I was kind of deterred,” says Adrian, who hails from Melbourne, Australia. “But it was always in my mind. I always knew that I was going to play this instrument. I just didn’t know when.” The when would be in 2013, when he stumbled across one on a music shop’s website. Since then, Adrian has become known for his videos, which show off his unique percussive style. Unlike the guitar or the piano, the handpan is still in its infant stages. (It was invented by a Swiss couple in 2001.) That’s why Adrian and the rest of the handpan community have taken charge in shaping how it’s heard by future generations. “We’re making the history of this instrument right now,” he says. #Instrumental #LocallySourced
