Brilliant moon ring in the #FloridaKeys. A moon ring, also known as a lunar halo, is caused by the ice crystals in cirrostratus clouds high in the upper troposphere. Light is reflected and refracted by the ice crystals and split up into colors because of dispersion. The crystals behave like prisms and mirrors, refracting and reflecting sunlight, sending shafts of light in particular directions. In the early days, before satellite and radar, this was one of the only ways that ships at sea knew a storm was approaching. Photo by Mike Theiss @ExtremeNature
