Photo by @ChrisBickford @National Geographic Travel: The word "whiskey" comes from the Irish word "uisce" (pronounced ISH-ka) which means, simply, water. In Irish, whiskey is called "uisce beatha", or water of life, which is a literal translation of the Latin "aqua vita". Medieval Irish monks were the first to Gaelicize the Latin term, though it is unclear whether the term was coined before or after the invention of whiskey as we know it today. I learned this fun fact shortly after taking this picture of a rain pool on the summit of one of Connemara's Twelve Bens in County Galway, Ireland. My friend Nico was obviously amused by my interest in water, and took the opportunity to teach me a little of "the Irish". Roughly eight of the peaks of the other Bens (from the Irish "binn", meaning mountain) can be seen in the background. #connemara #ireland #galway #twelvebens @natgeocreative
