Photo by @carltonward: this is an image I've been waiting to share. Now that a version is published in the current issue of Nature Conservancy Magazine (@nature_org), I can share the this story...In March of 2014, I was exploring the Rainbow River with Mac Stone when this cormorant let us swim up within a foot of its perch on a submerged palm. We had watching him forage beneath the surface further downstream when I noticed that he was returning back upstream to his favorite log. I was exhausted from swimming against the stiff current when I caught up and struggled to tread water holding my dome port at the water line. For an instant, the cormorant turned in my direction and spread his wings. Thankfully the focus and flash settings were ready to capture the moment. Then I relaxed and let the current swept me again downstream. The cormorant, which we affectionately named Edward because he was so distinguished, dried his wings a bit longer and then slid back into the water to chase more fish. We visited the Rainbow River this year during the @FL_WildCorridor #Glades2Gulf Expedition. I saw several cormorants and wondered how Edward was fairing. This Earth Day, I am thankful for the natural wonders of Florida and the magic we can experience when we get out and explore! #FloridaWild #LoveFL
