When @nytfood asked @francescotonelli to photograph a tower of #sandwiches, he poured over a list of carb-filled candidates, making sketches to determine which one would work best as a foundation. He and his team picked the meaty #Reuben, topping it with a banh mi, followed by a #muffuletta, a Cuban, a grilled cheese and a pork tenderloin. “We were trying to make decisions about what would make sense and look relatively realistic,” said Francesco, who made all of the sandwiches he photographed. Past experience shooting a 12-layer #sandwich taught him to layer plexiglass between each sandwich to solidify the structure. The end result is surreal, the wide Cuban heroically balanced upon the shapely muffuletta. @francescotonelli — who turned all but two of his subjects into dinner — will post behind-the-scenes photos from the shoot on his account.
