Inside a slave cabin at Laura Plantation, in Vacherie, #Louisiana. In the 1870s, Alcée Fortier, a folklorist who lived up the road, began to write down the stories that he heard former slaves telling their children in Creole French patois. Under the authorship of Joel Chandler Harris, the tales eventually entered the American canon as Br’er Rabbit. Today, four of the original slave cabins remain as part of a tour of the property. @misterwidmer photographed the plantation, which is west of New Orleans, for a @nytimestravel story exploring literary landmarks in Louisiana.
