Urucum, (also called urucu or uruku), the original Tupi name for oil produced from the seeds of Achiote shrub fruit, gives out a red, non-toxic dye. It is used by natives in the tropical regions of Central and South America to make red body paint and lipstick (Achiote is also referred to as the "lipstick tree"). Urucum is also widely used as a condiment, even as industrial food coloring. The Waiapi in Brazil use it to protect themselves from insects and believe that it guards them from evil spirits. This and other images I shot of the indigenous people of Brazil are now represented by National Geographic Creative.
