A year ago, the Crimean conflict escalated. A few years prior, #onassignment for National Geographic Magazine, I photographed as the Ukrainian Navy and Russian Black Sea Fleet held joint exercises in preparation for the upcoming Day of the Fleet. At that point, #sunbathers along the #embankment in #Sevastopol barely took notice of the military activity surrounding them. Just a couple years later, the former partners have become bitter enemies.
