In the 1950s, Magnum's #ErichHartmann took an assignment from the #PillsburyCompany to photograph in a small town in the state of Kansas. There, he became friends with a family on a local wheat farm, and when he photographed the labor of their fall harvest, something clicked: "I became aware of the dignity which touches the many whose work makes bread available and of the meaning which bread can have for us all." His project, Our Daily Bread, was born. Hartmann ended up spending several of the following years documenting bread as a symbol of something fundamental and universal in this world. This picture was made in Centralia, Kansas in 1956.
