BELGIUM, La Louvière (Hainaut). 7/02/2015: The 'Soumonces en musique' take place a few weeks before the actual carnival. The various brotherhoods, dressed with a blue miner's tunic and wearing wooden clogs, dance to the music of drums and brass, going from one café to another, holding a handful of twigs to ward off the evil spirit of winter. In the ongoing quest of finding out if Belgium is still around or still makes sense, this month of February I will focus on a series of carnivals in and around Binche.
