CAMBODIA, Phnom Penh. 3/02/2015: Training grounds of the 'brodal serei' boxers from the RCAF (Royal Cambodian Armed Forces), trained by former world champion E’Phoutang. Now this is the REAL thing: the hard training, the incessant kicks on the punching bag and the tyres, the sweat, the sighs and screams, the pain, the bruised muscles, the smell of rotting boxing gloves. All things which inspired Emmanuèle Phuon, a Brussels based choreographer with Cambodian roots, to create a contemporary dance piece based on ‘brodal serei’, the Cambodian version of kickboxing.
