In this image, a week before Mardi Gras, a spontaneous second-line parade explodes on the streets of the Marigny in New Orleans and makes its way into the French Quarter. Though the official Carnival season in New Orleans begins in January and ends on Fat Tuesday (which this year is February 17), it is a common expression that "every day is Mardi Gras in New Orleans".
