#NGTravelStories // Follow along today as @ChrisBickford shares images from Carnival celebrations in Venice and New Orleans. Dressing for Carnival has taken on an elaborate and dramatic symbology in the world of the iconic tribes of the Mardi Gras Indians of New Orleans, who stitch every piece of their suits by hand, and create new suits every year from scratch. Each Indian will spend thousands of hours constructing an outfit which they will wear no more than three or four times throughout the year. Though exactly when and why African-Americans in New Orleans began "masking Indian" is a complex subject rife with speculation and controversy, the tradition has become one of the greatest cultural treasures of New Orleans, a town already brimming with cultural treasures. Here, members of the Creole Wild West gang prepare to hit the streets to seek out rival gangs for ritual interaction. #MardiGrasIndians #CreoleWildWest #NewOrleans @NatGeoCreative
