Tonight is the biggest night of the year for Carnival masquerade balls around the world. Here, a late-night scene from La Cavalchina, the largest masquerade ball in Venice, held at the sumptuous La Fenice Opera House. "La Fenice" means "The Phoenix", and the theater is so named for good reason. Venice has lost three great Opera Houses to fire, roughly one a century, since 1774. But the city's theater companies continued to rise from the ashes to maintain Venice's position as one of the great centers for the performance arts in Europe. The last Saturday of Carnival every year, a floor is laid over the theater seats and La Fenice comes alive with all the pageantry, antics, and mystery of this ancient festival. #Carnevale #Venice #LaCavalchina #LaFenice @NatGeoCreative
