"I grew up reading 'Charlie,' looking at Cabbu’s drawings on my dad's lap. As an adult, I didn’t always agree with the newspaper, but its insolence was a reassuring presence. By attacking 'Charlie Hebdo' yesterday, these terrorists attacked a value that is core to French democracy: the free communication of ideas and opinions. I went to the 'I Am Charlie' protest in New York's Union Square to show these people they didn’t win. I screamed, 'Not afraid!' with all the other protestors and it was beautiful. But the truth is, I am scared shitless. I am afraid for my journalist friends back home in France — for their safety as well as the possible temptation to self-censor their opinions. I am afraid for the 99.99 percent of the French Muslim population that has nothing to do with yesterday’s terror, and really don’t need this right now. I am afraid of the good people of France calling for revenge and the return of the death penalty, and of those who are going to jump in the arms of the extreme right at the next elections." As told to RS by photographer @AxelDupeux
