As the tide comes in, small inlets form along the Emerald Coast in the Florida Panhandle, creating a twice-a-day exchange between the crystalline saltwater of the Gulf of Mexico and the dark, tannic mixture of groundwater, streams, runoff, rain, and storm surge that feed Walton County's Coastal Dune Lakes. The Lakes are a unique geographical feature and are only found in four other places in the world (Australia, New Zealand, Oregon, and Madagascar). In periods of heavy flooding, they serve as drains for the region, helping this area to avoid much of the ravages of coastal flooding that similarly situated communities experience. The best way to experience the lakes is probably from the beach a little before high tide, when rivulets that form as the coast appears to breathe in, and then breathe out. #FloridaWild #LoveFL #coastaldunelakes @sharealittlesunshine @VisitFL @NatGeoCreative #OnAssignment
