Magnum's Wayne Miller once said that his mission was to "photograph mankind and explain man to man." While Miller is often remembered for co-curating the world famous exhibition "Family of Man", it's the body of work he created in the late 40s, documenting African American communities of Chicago's south side, that just might best highlight his photographic legacy. In that decade alone, 1.5 million African American southerners migrated north to cities like Chicago -- a mass population shift sometimes dubbed "The Second Great Migration." This photograph, taken by Miller in 1948, shows a crowded meeting of packing house workers during a labor strike.
