Many of the great images of Marilyn Monroe were made by Magnum's Eve Arnold, who first struck up a friendship with the actress in the 1950s, before she photographed the iconic behind-the-scenes essay of Monroe on the set of John Huston's "The Misfits". The pair, photographer and subject, cultivated a unique working relationship and mutual trust that allowed for scenes like this one from 1955, of Monroe sprawled out in a marsh, to be captured. Arnold once said about the making of this particular image: “She was intrepid...She stood in [it], sat in it, lay in it until the light started to go and I called a halt. She climbed out, covered in mud, but she was exhilarated—and giggling.”
