A day after the NYC grand jury declined to indict officer #DanielPantaleo over the senseless choking death of #EricGarner, I'm still stunned and have no understanding of how this could happen. The video evidence and the Officers past use of the illegal choke holds and charges of racially motivated misconduct should have led to an Indictment.
While looking at the news I ran across an article on Propublica.org, which states that in Reported killings by police during 2010-2012 Black teenage men were 21 times more likely to die then whites. Like so many New Yorkers Garner was just trying to make a living and provide for his family of six children.
I am sure of one thing, the Grand jury process needs to be changed, both the Judge and the DA have a conflict of interest. They depend on some of the same officer's for other cases, that is an injustice that has to affect the fairness of the process. A change of venue has to be a logical step in the right direction.
While in South Africa, I was deeply moved by a trip to the #ApartheidMuseum, I was shocked that this system was in place until 1994. I wonder how many people could have dealt with the injustice that Mandela and other South Africans faced. "People need to know that black lives and brown lives matter as much as white lives", said Mayor de Blasio. He could not be more right, and something as to change. #Icantbreathe #blacklivesmatter
