Photo: @ljohnphoto | This is Tun Tun, here in Myanmar. He is part of a thousand year-old Asian tradition which relies on performing monkeys as a livelihood. The primate performers typically include a variety of species such as: rhesus, pigtail, longtail, toque, Assamese and Japanese macaques. The men and their monkeys share a tent as home and stage, traveling town to town during the pagoda festival season. Counterintuitively, this tradition may be an important and protective Ark for genetic diversity as monkey species move and mix throughout their performing lives.
