Global bidding for an American icon: Masterworks from the Collection of Mrs. Paul Mellon brought a spectacular $158.7 million tonight, well above expectations. The auction achieved fabled “white glove” status, with every lot finding a buyer. The sale was led by two paintings by Mark Rothko that together achieved $76.5 million.
Sales from Mrs. Mellon’s collections continue with the public exhibition of her Jewelry and Interiors opening this Saturday at 10 am.
