King of the Beasts on the Threatened Species List. Lions have been designated to this category by US Fish and Wildlife. Daniel M. Ashe, their director, says, "Lions are likely to disappear in the foreseeable future" if they are not protected. According to the International Union of Conservation in Nature there are about 35,000 lions left in Africa, down from 75,000 in 1980.
