Did you recognise the man in today’s Google doodle? He’s Mr Zubir Said, composer of our National Anthem. Today would have been Mr Zubir’s 107th birthday. He passed away in 1987, at the age of 80.

Mr Zubir contributed much to Malay arts and culture. He composed 1,500 songs and soundtracks, including “Majulah Singapura” (Onward Singapore). Initially commissioned for the reopening of Victoria Theatre in 1958, Majulah Singapura became our National Anthem the following year, when we attained self-government.

With Singapore’s 49th birthday just around the corner, today’s doodle is a timely reminder of all the people who have contributed to our nation building. Are there any others you remember warmly? ? - LHL
