Cetacealab sits on a remote island deep in the heart of Gitga’at territory in Canada’s Great Bear Rainforest. For over a decade Janie Wray and Hermann Meuter have studied the humpback whales and Orcas that call these waters home. Years of cataloguing and identifying whales by their tail flukes/dorsal fins and listening to their calls on a expansive network of underwater hydrophones has shown that the seas of Great Bear Rainforest are a critical habitat for both species. The route that supertankers will have to navigate to transport the oil from the recently approved Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline will pass directly though some of the most important and sensitive whale and dolphin habitats in Canada.
