In the south of Italy, several villages lie abandoned after a series of earthquakes and landslides in the 1980s and ‘90s. @TEDFellow Jorge Mañes Rubio explores the abandoned villages and shares beautiful photographs in homage to a culture that once thrived. He says, “A number of attempts to rebuild have been made, but a lack of funding, corruption, and apparent disregard for their own heritage have proved fatal.” Rubio is now working on a project to replace many of the icons and artworks stolen from these villages, infusing the new works with local lore.
