Photo by @gordonwiltsie In this image from 1980, Pertemba Sherpa demonstrates rappelling to a group of fellow guides during an early mountaineering course for Sherpas (with Mount Ama Dablam as a backdrop.) Today similar work is carried on in earnest by the Alex Lowe Charitable Foundation ( www.Alexlowe.org ,) which is profoundly improving both the technical abilities and safety standards for these hardy guides who do most of the dangerous work on expeditions throughout the Himalaya. As has already been widely reported on this site, a massive avalanche in the Khumbu icefall - the most dangerous part of the main route up Mount Everest - recently killed 16 Sherpas and has devastated their families, friends and the mountaineering community around the world. As also reported, a group of ten photographers has donated signed prints for a ONE WEEK FLASH SALE to raise money to benefit both the bereaved families and other outreach programs for this remarkable culture. If you haven't already visited the site, please check out www.sherpafund.bigcartel.com before the sale ENDS TOMORROW. 50% of all proceeds will be distributed directly to families in need via already-existing funds established by the Alex Lowe Charitable Foundation (ALCF) and the American Himalayan Foundation (AHF.) The other half will go to long-term community assistance, including the Khumbu Climbing Center operated by ALCF and Everest ER, a clinic at base camp funded by AHF. (This particular image is not part of that sale.) Many thanks to Aaron Huey (@argonautphoto), Jenni Lowe from the ALCF, National Geographic and Outside Magazine for help putting the site together. Other photographers include @Jimmy_Chin, James Balog, @CoryRichards, @Renan_Ozturk, Teru Kuwayama, @PedroMcBride (Pete McBride,) Andy Bardo, Robb Kendrick, and Max Lowe (@maxwellsilver).
