Selma, another resident of Rockaway Beach, didn’t start receiving FEMA aid until the end of February. During her wait, she was forced to begin repairs with electrical and plumbing work out of her own pocket. She has almost finished rebuilding, but what work has been done is only temporary because of the infamously-changing flood zone maps. According to her insurance requirements, all utilities have to be on the second floor and her house needs to be raised. An organization called Build it Back is scheduled to stop by to survey the property to make changes to avoid insurance penalties. Selma finds it impossible to see how she can raise her house twelve feet because it’s all on cinderblock.
There is not much fighting that can be done as most of these requirements are set in stone. She has made a remarkable recovery thanks to handy work from her son and Michelle Cortez. Selma has pride in the home she has rebuilt and refurnished. Despite the hurdles that Hurricane Sandy has thrown her way, she remains exceedingly optimistic and proud of the home she has painstakingly rebuilt. Photo by CNN’s @timlampe for #CNNSandy (5 of 5)
