Chit chat. Mr Wang, 59, a disabled pedicab rider and his pair of crutches. One of the things I like most about Beijing - and China - is random conversations (sometimes long and involved!) with strangers just met. Sometimes, urban China can feel like a cold and unfriendly place where everyone just minds their own business. But other times, serendipity leads people like Mr Wang to strike up a conversation. I speak Mandarin and these days, most cannot tell I'm a foreigner so they speak fairly freely. Parked outside a big bus station, Mr Wang tells me he was waiting for his college-going son. He also showed me a certificate he got for being an exemplary disabled individual, and told me he played in China's national Paralympic basketball team in the Beijing Paralympics in 2008 -- an event I had photographed.
