Legacy of Gunkan-Jima, or Battle-ship island due to the looks, sits in the sea off Nagasaki's gulf. Although it was closed decades ago, the island was a critical coal mine more than 140 years, especially during the war time in the early and mid 20th century. The city of Nagasaki was also an important industrial and trading port during that time.
