Today, as French and Malian troops are liberating Gao from Islamic fundamentalists, I'm reminded of my own time in Northern Mali in 2004. I had taken off on the opposite bank of the NIger River with my paraglider, and after taking a few photos of Gao, I was low on fuel and landed in the town's football stadium. I was instantly surrounded by a hundreds of excited and unruly street kids that the police had to keep back with bull whips. Hunting for souvenirs in the market that afternoon, I bought a cheap wristwatch with Bin Laden's face on it, and shirt with an AK-47 motif. From above the town appears quite peaceful in its position straddling the border between the Sahara and tropical Africa. @ナショナルジオグラフィック, @thephotosociety, @geosteinmetz
