As I look at this picture I am astonished how rapidly times have changed. Back in 1996, when I shot this in Queen Maud Land, Antarctica, the ski plane departed and left us totally alone. Even in an emergency, our only communication was via radio to another distant camp where an answer was not guaranteed. Our families went 6 weeks without a word from us.
In order to get sponsorship for a similar journey today, however, we would likely have to log in daily via satellite, send Instagrams, post to blogs and keep up a Facebook page. If two or three days passed with no word, our friends and family might panic. From an armchair perspective, I will admit that much has been gained with this ever-increasing connectivity, but for an explorer much has also been lost. I miss the wonder of just disappearing into the wilds of the earth.
