After more than seven minutes of heated bidding between eight participants, Agnes Martin’s ‘Grey Stone II’ sets a new auction record for the artist during The Emily Fisher Landau Collection evening sale at #SothebysNewYork. It sold to a bidder in the room for $18.7 million, more than double its high estimate.
 
One of five works by Martin featuring gold leaf, it is the only one to have ever appeared at auction. Only two others of this group are of comparable scale, and both are housed in museum collections at MoMA & San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
