In 1958, nine Soviet youths were found dead in the Ural Mountains. Something had caused the group, all highly experienced winter campers and cross-country skiers, to cut themselves out of their tent and flee into a howling blizzard, in 20-below-zero temperatures, in bare feet or socks. Several of the victims had catastrophic injuries—similar levels of damage to the “result of an impact of an automobile moving at high speed,” according to the medical examiner—and unnaturally high levels of radiation, but none of the bodies had external penetrating wounds. In the decades since, theories about the cause of their deaths have abounded. Did they accidentally stumble into a testing site for secret weapons? Was it a U.F.O.—or possibly a Yeti? Revisit the true spooky story at the link in our bio. Illustration by @rfressonok.
