Martin Scorsese’s forthcoming film, “Killers of the Flower Moon”—the director’s first attempt at a Western—tells the story of a Ernest Burkhart, a white man who marries an Osage woman named Mollie as part of a wide-ranging and murderous scheme to pry away the wealth of the Osage Nation, on whose territory oil has been discovered. In a new interview, Scorsese discusses how he came to make the film and sought out the right way to tell a story about a series of murders that took place on Native land. “I was very concerned about meeting the Osage Nation to see how we could coöperate together,” he says. “I got them to understand that I wanted to do the best I could with them and the story, and that they could trust me, I hoped.” Read his full conversation with Richard Brody at the link in our bio.
