Meet the coconut crab - the largest land-living arthropod in the world. These mega-sized hermit crabs can weigh up to nine pounds and grow to over three feet in length (measuring from the tip of one leg to another). While juveniles of this species rely on empty gastropod shells for protection, adults like this one do not, thanks to the development of a tough exoskeleton on their abdomens. They also display different coloration depending on which island they call home.
