But, frankly, what could? And I’m ashamed that I haven’t even got a photograph of the incredible crab or, indeed, the venison, which was luscious in a way I have never encountered before. But I do have an admittedly less-than-perfect pic of their whitebait (pic 2) which was the first thing I ate at The Stein – and which very quickly made it clear that we had hit gold. These come with a pitch-perfect tartare sauce and a divine kimchi-tangy spicy mayo. This is the sort of place that gladly sends out further portions of sauce, and I tell you that because I advise ordering some of their perfect chips at the same time for an ecstatic dipping experience. I can also advise dipping these chips into the whisky cream sauce that accompanies their Haggis and Black Pudding Bonbon (pic 3). I’d eaten haggis bonbons once when in Glasgow and they were indeed the size of bonbons; the one here is as big as a tennis ball, and delivers proportionately huge amounts of joy. 🩵 And that’s the thing about the @Stein_Inn: it’s not just a place, but a truly and enduringly happy-making experience.
