From pigments to their physical structure, many things give color to bird feathers. But only turaco feathers contain turacin and turacoverdin, pigments rich in copper that create such bright red and green hues. Despite their bright appearance, red-crested turacos rarely show off their fine feathers anywhere other than the privacy of leafy tree branches, descending from perches in the dense forests of central Africa only to eat or drink.
