“Especially within an Anishinaabe point of view, color has spiritual capacity and it has emotional capacity.” – Wanda Nanibush (Anishinaabe-kwe, Beausoleil First Nation), Curator

Robert Houle (Saulteaux Anishinaabe, Sandy Bay First Nation) uses color as a foundation for artistic expression. His work embodies the idea of “transculturalism,” or the combination of Indigenous and Euro-American ways of making art. This painting, “Red Is Beautiful,” is the focal point and namesake of the “Robert Houle: Red is Beautiful” exhibit. Now on view at @smithsoniannmai in Washington, DC, this exhibit spans the five decades of Houle’s career which includes large installations, paintings, video, mixed-media sculpture and drawings.
