Happy World Refugee Day, as the war and other conflicts forcibly displace more than 100 million people worldwide — it could be more than 110 million at the end of 203.

The images are refugees from South Ossetia or nearby the region. I photographed them in Tbisili, the capital of Georgia, when they just escaped the Russian invasion of South Ossetia in 2008. Since then, South Ossetia is virtually controlled by Russia. Although South Ossetia declared the independence, as of 2023, only Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru, and Syria recognise it as a sovereign state. The absolute majority of the world recognise South Ossetia as part of the sovereignty of Georgia. And still so many refugees in Georgia can’t go back to their homes.
