Caring for the dead like they’re still living may be the truest form of love—and in a mountainous region of Indonesia, it actually is. The Toraja people keep their deceased loved ones close—in a separate room of the home—mummifying their bodies and treating them to the essentials: food, water, clothing and cigarettes.

In August, in a ritual known as Ma’nene, the dead are brought out of their coffins, washed, and brought down to the village, where the younger generations connect with their lineage and learn to deal with death from an early age. It's not unusual to see young Torajans share a smoke or take selfies with their mummified ancestors.

To Torajans, the dead are never really gone—instead, they would be shocked by the sheer number of retirement homes and outsourced tomb cleaning in the Western world.
